Mirage

Yucca Valley Desert Installation

The mirage installation is a space where nature can be contemplated through an individuals own lens; be it spiritual, scientific or artistic.

Consisting of a series of monolithic shade structures, the rotating colored glass casts shadows to distort the landscape, mirroring the effect of a mirage.

Location

This project was inspired by the site itself, Yucca Valley, CA.

I was motivated by the way light shifts throughout the day, creating new habitats and resting places in the shadows. I wanted to use glass to cast waterlike shadows that morph as the sun rises and sets.

Biophilic Research

  • Mirage

An optical illusion caused by atmospheric conditions, especially the appearance of a sheet of water in the desert.

  • Aerial Perspective

A monocular cue to depth perception consisting of the relative clarity of object. Nearer objects are usually more clear where as disstant objects appear more blue.

  • Forty Nine Palms Oasis

An oasis develops from a freshwaterspring in the desert, allowing plants to grow. They form when wind tunnels cut a deep groove in the earth and uncover dormant ground springs.

Glass work

I learned how to cast glass from lost wax as well as slump glass in order to understand the material. I took a glass casting workshop in Yucca Valley, where I explored translucency and light. I later slumped plates to test out color combinations and ratios. The final glass pieces were all individually cut and slumped.
